In the Narok region of Kenya, access to quality healthcare has been a significant challenge due to long distances, rough terrain, and unreliable electricity. Addressing this issue, a new innovation known as Stella Juva has emerged, representing the world’s first road-legal solar-powered ambulance. Developed by Solar Team Eindhoven at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, Stella Juva aims to bring healthcare directly to remote communities rather than relying on traditional ambulance services.

Stella Juva operates as an electric vehicle powered by integrated solar panels, with a 50 kWh battery that allows it to function even after sunset. A key feature of this ambulance is its ability to generate more solar energy than it consumes while stationary, making it energy independent. This capability is particularly crucial in areas where the power grid is inconsistent or nonexistent, allowing medical personnel to deliver care without interruption.

Equipped with advanced medical equipment including an X-ray machine, ultrasound, and automated external defibrillator, Stella Juva also addresses a critical issue in remote healthcare: vaccine refrigeration. Cold chain failures have historically hindered immunization efforts in these regions, but Stella Juva’s reliable refrigeration ensures that vaccines remain effective.

In its first practical test, conducted in collaboration with Amref Health Africa, Stella Juva successfully covered over 800 kilometers in the Narok region. The test involved navigating challenging terrain, including a six-hour drive to reach a remote community. Despite facing mechanical challenges, the team was able to quickly repair the vehicle and complete the mission. Over two days, Stella Juva demonstrated its capacity to provide care to approximately 200 people, including performing ultrasound scans for up to 40 pregnant women during a single outreach session.

Stella Juva’s innovative design redefines the role of an ambulance. Unlike traditional models that respond to emergencies, this solar-powered vehicle is built for proactive healthcare outreach, enabling early identification of health risks and timely interventions. Following its successful test, the Solar Team Eindhoven is seeking partnerships to explore the potential for scaling this groundbreaking solution into a fleet that could further enhance healthcare access in remote areas.
