Greece Unveils Groundbreaking Nanosatellite Network to Tackle Wildfire Threats Head-On

Greece has launched an innovative satellite system aimed at enhancing wildfire detection and response. The initiative involves four OroraTech nanosatellites, each smaller than a carry-on bag, which were sent into low Earth orbit in May. This deployment marks Greece as the first country to establish a satellite constellation specifically designed for wildfire monitoring and management, providing crucial updates every hour without any coverage gaps.

The nanosatellites employ advanced thermal imaging technology to capture data with a resolution of four by four meters. This information is processed through artificial intelligence models that accurately differentiate between natural heat sources and potential wildfires. By filtering out heat from common sources such as solar panels and factory rooftops, the system ensures that alerts sent to emergency services are precise and actionable.

When a fire is detected, incident commanders receive immediate alerts detailing the fire’s location, size, and intensity. This swift communication is vital for effective firefighting, particularly in remote areas where wildfires can escalate rapidly before being noticed by human observers. The satellite system also runs spread simulations, enabling field commanders to visualize potential fire movement and adjust their strategies accordingly.

Greece has experienced some of the worst wildfire seasons in Europe, making this technology particularly timely and essential. The satellites are operational just as the summer season approaches, a period often marked by increased wildfire risk in the region. The initiative has been funded by the European Union, underlining a collaborative effort to bolster disaster response capabilities.
