According to pest management expert Jim McHale, soaking cotton balls and placing them near areas of activity may initially seem logical. However, the scent fades quickly, potentially leaving behind a soft nesting material for pests already present in the home. Instead, McHale recommends applying a diluted oil-based solution directly at the entry points and pathways that pests use to gain access. A five percent eucalyptus oil solution has been shown in studies to deter both rodents and crawling insects effectively.
For optimal results, it is essential to reapply the eucalyptus solution daily, as the scent diminishes over time. Homeowners should also take preventative measures by inspecting the perimeter of their home and sealing any gaps or cracks before applying the oil. This preparation ensures that there are fewer entry points for pests.
Safety is a crucial consideration when using eucalyptus oil, as it can be toxic to pets and young children. It is advised to dilute the oil before use and keep treated areas out of reach until they are dry.
While eucalyptus oil can be a helpful component in managing small pest problems, McHale emphasizes that it is not a standalone solution. Once pest infestations become established, more comprehensive methods, such as live trapping and sealing off entry points, become necessary.
