Cervical spine surgeon K. Daniel Riew at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has begun treating an increasing number of patients in their 20s, a demographic that was previously rare in his practice. This shift is attributed to the rising prevalence of screen time in everyday life, with Americans averaging approximately seven hours a day on screens, according to DataReportal.
The phenomenon known as “tech neck” is becoming more prevalent as individuals tilt their heads forward to view screens. This posture leads to increased strain on the neck muscles and can result in ordinary soreness. More significantly, prolonged pressure on the cervical discs can cause premature cell death and accelerated degeneration over time. Riew emphasizes the importance of proper cervical alignment, particularly as phones are used more frequently than other screens, often in less ergonomically favorable positions.
In terms of ergonomic advice, Riew challenges conventional wisdom that recommends sitting up straight at a 90-degree angle. He suggests a reclined position between 25 to 30 degrees with proper lumbar support and a headrest, which better distributes the weight of the head and torso, reducing strain on the spine.
Meanwhile, concerns about the impact of screen time on children’s vision, particularly the rise in myopia, are being examined. Vision scientist Donald Mutti indicates that screens may not directly contribute to the development of nearsightedness. Instead, the lack of outdoor activity, which has been shown to protect against myopia, is a more significant factor. Research indicates that children who spend at least two hours outdoors each day are less likely to develop myopia, provided their outdoor exposure exceeds 15 minutes per outing.
Additionally, grip strength, an important indicator of overall health, has been declining across various populations. While some attribute this decline to increased screen use, medical sociologist Johannes Beller points out that this trend predates smartphones. He emphasizes that maintaining physical activity is crucial for preserving overall strength and health, regardless of age.
As screen time continues to rise, these findings highlight the need for awareness and proactive measures regarding posture, outdoor activity, and physical fitness.
