Brighton and Hove Albion is set to make a significant advancement in women’s football by constructing a purpose-built stadium specifically for its women’s team. The new venue, planned for Bennett’s Field adjacent to the club’s Amex Stadium, will have a capacity of 10,000 and is expected to open for the 2030-31 season. The project is estimated to cost between £75 million and £80 million (approximately $95 million to $100 million).
This stadium will be designed with the needs of female athletes and their supporters in mind, featuring state-of-the-art changing rooms, medical and recovery facilities, breastfeeding rooms, baby-changing areas, and buggy parks. Currently, the women’s team plays most of its matches at Crawley Town’s Broadfield Stadium, located about 20 miles from Brighton, which has highlighted the necessity for a dedicated home ground.
Brighton’s decision to construct a stadium tailored for its women’s team marks a departure from the trend among many Women’s Super League (WSL) clubs, which are typically affiliated with their men’s teams and often play in larger stadiums designed for those teams. Ten of the twelve WSL clubs have opted to play in their men’s stadiums, with Chelsea and Arsenal being notable examples. In contrast, Brighton’s new stadium will be the first of its kind in the top flight of women’s football in England and the first purpose-built stadium for women’s football in Europe.
The move reflects a growing commitment to women’s sports at Brighton, which has seen substantial investment in recent years, including an £8.5 million (approximately $10.8 million) upgrade to training facilities in 2021. The new stadium represents a long-term commitment to promoting women’s football and enhancing the experience for players and fans alike. As planning progresses, Brighton’s initiative is being closely watched as a potential model for other clubs in the future.
