Nearly one billion people across Africa rely on charcoal or firewood for cooking, a practice that poses significant health risks due to indoor air pollution. In response to this pressing issue, the International Energy Agency (IEA) announced on Thursday that African countries have secured $900 million in new financial commitments aimed at expanding access to clean cooking technologies. This funding increases the total commitments to over $3.1 billion, building on the $2.2 billion mobilized during the inaugural Africa Clean Cooking Summit held in Paris in 2024.
The reliance on traditional cooking fuels contributes to an estimated 850,000 premature deaths annually, with women and children disproportionately affected. Indoor air pollution from burning charcoal and firewood is a leading cause of health issues in households across the continent, making the transition to clean cooking a critical public health priority.
The recent financial commitments were unveiled during a virtual meeting hosted by the IEA in collaboration with Kenya, highlighting international support for the initiative. Approximately $740 million of the pledged funds has already been deployed across 22 African countries, which is a positive step toward mitigating the health risks associated with traditional cooking methods.
The next Africa Clean Cooking Summit is anticipated later this year, where further discussions will take place on achieving comprehensive access to clean cooking technologies. Although reaching all households in need will require more than the current $3.1 billion in pledges, the momentum is building, with an increasing number of countries making tangible progress in implementing clean cooking solutions. This shift not only aims to improve health outcomes but also seeks to enhance the quality of life for millions of families across the continent.
