Electric aircraft startups are making significant strides in developing sustainable aviation options, with two notable companies nearing operational readiness. French startup Aura Aero and Dutch aerospace firm Elysian Aircraft are working on hybrid and battery-electric planes that promise to transform short-haul travel in Europe.
Aura Aero is in the process of building a 19-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft capable of covering distances up to 1,500 kilometers (930 miles). The company aims to achieve certification by late 2029. This aircraft is designed to reduce emissions by up to 80 percent and can utilize sustainable aviation fuel, marking a substantial shift toward environmentally friendly air travel.
Elysian Aircraft, collaborating with KLM, is developing a larger, battery-electric model intended for commercial service by 2035. This aircraft will accommodate 90 passengers and have a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). The focus on electric and hybrid options aligns with current trends in the aviation industry, where fluctuating jet fuel prices and thin profit margins on short routes create a compelling economic case for sustainability.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has indicated that battery-electric and hybrid planes could serve up to a quarter of Europe’s existing flight routes, including popular short-haul trips such as London to Dublin and Barcelona to Ibiza. These routes often connect islands or cross water, making them less feasible for rail alternatives.
The European Commission has also begun to recognize the potential of electric aircraft, proposing to extend aviation decarbonization funding to support their development alongside sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen-powered planes. This regulatory support reflects a shift in perspective, acknowledging that electric flight is no longer a distant possibility but an imminent reality.
While the environmental benefits of electric aircraft are clear, their overall sustainability hinges on the energy sources used to charge them and the emissions associated with battery production. Regions with cleaner energy grids are likely to see the fastest adoption of electric aviation technology, paving the way for a more sustainable future in air travel.
