This technique involves simultaneously reading a physical book while listening to its audiobook counterpart. According to TikTok data, searches for immersive reading surged nearly tenfold from January to May 2026, and increased thirteen times year-over-year.
Though this practice may seem modern, its roots can be traced back to the ancient oral storytelling tradition. Epic poems like “The Iliad” were originally performed rather than read. This connection to historical methods of storytelling has resonated with readers seeking deeper engagement with texts.
Immersive reading has proven especially beneficial for individuals who struggle with maintaining attention while reading. For example, some educators have successfully employed this technique with students facing challenges such as dyslexia or ADHD, where combining audio and text has shown to improve comprehension and retention. Popular titles among immersive readers include Andy Weir’s “Project Hail Mary” and Stephen King’s “It.”
While many embrace this dual approach, cognitive neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf raises caution. She emphasizes the difference between immersive reading and what she terms “deep reading,” which develops critical thinking and empathy. Wolf argues that the effort involved in traditional reading fosters these skills, while the simultaneous audio component may reduce the cognitive engagement required for deep comprehension.
Despite differing opinions, the rise of immersive reading reflects a broader trend of seeking ways to enhance the reading experience, especially as leisure reading declines. Ultimately, this technique encourages a return to the immersive worlds created by storytelling, reminiscent of the ways narratives were shared long before the advent of printed books.
