The Chicago Public Library (CPL) and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have launched an expansion of The 81 Club, a program designed to make library access easier for students by transforming their school IDs into library cards. This initiative aims to remove barriers that many students face when trying to access library resources, particularly for those who are unhoused, in foster care, or undocumented.
Beginning this month, every CPS student can enter any of the city’s 81 library branches, present their school ID or ID number, and gain access to a vast collection of over 6 million items, including books, digital databases, and academic tools. The program eliminates the need for traditional application processes, such as proof of residency or parental signatures, which can be obstacles for many families.
The 81 Club is not a new concept; it follows a successful pilot program conducted in 2022 in four Chicago neighborhoods: Englewood, West Englewood, Rogers Park, and New City. The pilot revealed significant increases in library usage among economically disadvantaged students, with a 63 percent rise in borrowing rates and an 81 percent increase among English language learners. These statistics indicate that the previous requirements constituted a significant barrier to access.
In addition to physical library access, the program provides CPS teachers and students with access to Sora, a digital platform offering millions of eBooks, audiobooks, and instructional materials. This resource further enhances the educational opportunities available to students throughout the city.
The city’s administration has emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure equitable access to library resources for all students, regardless of their ZIP code or school enrollment status. As part of the program, The 81 Club will also introduce limited-edition library cards featuring artwork created by students, reinforcing the program’s commitment to inclusivity and creativity.
The expansion of The 81 Club marks a significant step toward making educational resources more accessible to Chicago’s youth, fostering a culture of learning and exploration in underserved communities.
