A recent study conducted by researchers at York University in Toronto has revealed significant benefits of a social media detox on self-esteem and body image among young women. The study, led by psychology professor Jennifer Mills, involved 66 female undergraduate students and aimed to assess the psychological effects of a week-long break from social media.

Participants were divided into two groups: one that continued their usual social media usage and another that refrained from all social media platforms for one week. The researchers measured participants’ self-esteem and body satisfaction before and after the intervention, employing screen time monitoring to ensure adherence to the study’s guidelines.

The findings indicated a substantial increase in self-esteem and body image satisfaction among those who abstained from social media. The results demonstrated a robust effect, suggesting that reduced social media exposure can lead to positive changes in self-perception and mental health.

The study highlights the vulnerability of young women to negative body image issues, particularly during the transition to adulthood, a critical period for identity formation.
