In 2022, a group of high school students from California initiated an innovative project that combined education and philanthropy. They designed and created 150 LEGO-inspired airplane kits, which were 3D printed, assembled by hand, and shipped to Kenya Relief Academy in Migori. This school serves around 800 students, including a significant number of orphans, and is recognized as the top primary school in its region.
The initiative was led by Student Makers, a nonprofit organization founded in 2019, which has since gained 501(c)(3) status. Predominantly run by teenagers, the organization provides free workshops on various topics, including 3D printing, Python programming, data science, and financial literacy, while maintaining partnerships with schools in Kenya and India.
Since the initial shipment of airplane kits, Student Makers has expanded its contributions to Kenya Relief Academy. This includes the donation of a 3D printer, an Arduino kit, and over 400 curriculum slides. The organization has also provided 60 hours of teacher training and has directly engaged with more than 30 students. Notably, a group of students developed an autonomous agriculture rover, achieving third place at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair.
In addition to its work in Kenya, Student Makers has launched live 3D printing classes via video call for students at Dr. R. V. Shah English Medium School in rural Gujarat, India. This program has benefitted over 25 secondary students and has been part of a broader effort to promote STEM education in underserved communities.
Looking ahead, Student Makers plans to extend its reach to three underserved schools near Mexico City and to assist Kenya Relief Academy students in producing medical-grade face shields for their on-site clinic. The organization is committed to ensuring that every child has access to quality STEM education, regardless of their geographical location.
Through these initiatives, Student Makers continues to empower young learners and foster a sense of global community and collaboration in technology and education.
