In a significant effort to combat plastic pollution and create economic opportunities, PeaceCYCLE, a social enterprise based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is transforming discarded plastic sachets into functional products while empowering local communities. Founded in 2014 by Amber Rose Heimann, PeaceCYCLE addresses the pressing issue of plastic waste in a country where millions of single-use sachets are discarded daily without any formal recycling infrastructure.
The initiative collects, cleans, and repurposes these plastic sachets into durable items such as tote bags, lunch sacks, and pencil cases. By doing so, PeaceCYCLE not only mitigates environmental degradation but also provides dignified employment to individuals who are often overlooked by Haiti’s formal economy.
The process begins with community members bringing in flattened sachets, which are then washed, sanitized, and transformed into patchwork sheets using both charcoal irons and solar power. Notably, approximately 40% of the ironing is powered by solar energy, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices. The sheets are cut and sewn by local artisans using treadle machines, allowing the operation to function without relying on consistent electricity.
To date, PeaceCYCLE has upcycled over 5 million bags and processes around 1,500 sachets every day. The workshop atmosphere emphasizes not only productivity but also joy, as staff engage in games and activities that promote a sense of community and fun. This approach aims to nurture creativity and restore a sense of childhood joy among adults who have faced significant hardships.
Beyond environmental impact, PeaceCYCLE focuses on redefining the value of both materials and people. The organization strives to create opportunities for personal growth and financial stability, with many artisans reporting life-changing benefits from their work. The initiative encourages a shift in mindset from disposability to care, highlighting the potential for transformation in both waste and human lives.
Although still small in scale, PeaceCYCLE has garnered global support, with its products featured in select stores and embraced by socially conscious consumers. The organization continues to face challenges, as each item produced requires considerable time and effort. Nevertheless, PeaceCYCLE remains steadfast in its mission to create beauty and impact through innovative, community-driven solutions.
