The University of Sussex has announced the launch of the UK’s first undergraduate degree focused on climate justice, sustainability, and development, set to commence in 2026. This innovative Bachelor of Arts program aims to meet the increasing demand for expertise in climate politics, environmental human rights, and sustainable development.

The initiative responds to a survey conducted by Future Forum, which found that 72 percent of young people aged 14 to 18 are calling for more comprehensive climate change education, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. The new program seeks to bridge this educational gap by integrating academic theory with practical skills relevant to the green economy.

A distinctive feature of the course is its emphasis on hands-on learning. Instead of traditional essay assignments, students will engage in projects such as creating podcasts to communicate complex issues surrounding environmental justice effectively. Additionally, the curriculum will include practical training in the university’s campus forest food garden, providing students with applicable skills beyond academic study.

The introduction of this degree highlights the rising interest in climate justice education that addresses both environmental and social challenges associated with the climate crisis. The program recognizes that climate change disproportionately affects marginalized communities and aims to empower students to advocate for equitable solutions.

As the impacts of climate change continue to reshape global politics and society, the University of Sussex’s new program is positioned as a proactive approach to education. By focusing on climate justice, activism, and practical training, the BA program is set to prepare future leaders with the necessary tools to tackle these pressing issues effectively.
