As spring approaches, cherry blossom enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the annual bloom of Yoshino cherry trees across the United States. This breathtaking natural display, characterized by delicate pink flowers, typically lasts only one to two weeks, making it essential for viewers to know the optimal time to visit.
In Washington, D.C., the National Park Service has announced that the peak bloom is expected between March 29 and April 1. The Tidal Basin and National Mall will be the prime viewing locations, featuring thousands of Yoshino cherry trees. In recent years, the timing of the bloom has been shifting earlier, so visitors are encouraged to stay updated on progress as the dates near.
Southern states will witness cherry blossoms first, with peak bloom in areas like Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas occurring about one to two weeks before D.C. Macon, Georgia, hosts the largest concentration of cherry trees in the nation and will celebrate its International Cherry Blossom Festival from March 20 to 29. Meanwhile, the Dallas Arboretum in Texas anticipates the opening of its Yoshino cherry blossoms in the coming weeks.
In the Midwest, the bloom period varies from late March to early May, depending on the region. Missouri and Ohio typically see blossoms from late March to mid-April, while Chicago’s Jackson Park is noted for its cherry trees. Door County, Wisconsin, will have its peak bloom around mid-May.
In New York City, cherry blossoms can be found in several parks, including Central Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The blossoms generally begin to appear in late March, reaching full bloom by mid to late April. New England, on the other hand, sees its cherry trees bloom approximately 20 days after D.C., typically between the second and third week of April. The Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival in New Haven, Connecticut, is scheduled for April 19.
On the West Coast, the University of Washington in Seattle is expecting its Yoshino cherry trees to reach peak bloom from late March to early April. Portland, Oregon, will showcase cherry trees along Tom McCall Waterfront Park and at the Portland Japanese Garden, where blooms are anticipated to peak between late March and the first week of April.
