While these small, wingless insects do not pose health risks or bite, they can cause damage to books, wallpaper, and stored food.
A simple and sustainable method for controlling silverfish populations has been highlighted by entomologists: using a rolled-up, slightly damp newspaper. Silverfish thrive in environments with humidity levels above 75 percent and temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making damp newspaper an attractive option for these pests.
The cellulose content of newspaper is particularly appealing to silverfish, which consume it by scraping apart the fibers with specialized mouthparts and digesting it with enzymes. To utilize this method, individuals can take an old newspaper, lightly moisten it, roll it up, and secure it with a rubber band or string. This trap should be placed in areas where silverfish activity is noted, such as under sinks or along basement walls.
Leaving the newspaper in place overnight may attract silverfish, which can then be disposed of along with the newspaper the following morning. Repeating this process over several nights can further decrease the silverfish population in affected areas.
This approach is not only environmentally friendly but also sidesteps the use of harsh chemicals, making it suitable for households with pets, children, or those sensitive to chemical residues.
