As daylight saving time approaches, parents face the annual challenge of adjusting their children’s sleep schedules. The shift can be particularly disruptive for babies and toddlers, whose internal clocks do not adapt as quickly as adults. This year, experts suggest that with some proactive planning, families can navigate the change with less stress and fewer sleepless nights.
The core issue lies in the way young children’s biological rhythms respond to the time change. Unlike adults, who can mentally adjust to the new clock time, infants and toddlers rely heavily on their internal rhythms, often resulting in early wake-ups and fussy bedtimes. As a result, parents may experience a period of adjustment that can last several days.
To mitigate the impact of the time change, sleep consultants recommend gradually shifting children’s schedules in the days leading up to the clock change. For infants, this can be achieved by modifying daily routines—such as wake times, feeding, and bedtimes—by 15 minutes each day. For instance, if a baby typically wakes at 6 a.m., parents can gradually move this time to 5 a.m. in the days before the transition. By the time daylight saving time begins, the baby will wake up at approximately the new 6 a.m.
Toddlers, who may require a more extensive adjustment, benefit from starting the process even earlier. Parents are advised to begin shifting their child’s schedule three to four days before the time change to ensure a smoother transition. This involves adjusting not only bedtime but also naps and meal times, enabling a more natural adaptation to the new schedule.
Parents also need to be mindful of early morning wake-ups, which can become more pronounced following the time change. Observing daytime sleep patterns is crucial; incorporating short naps, known as “catnaps,” can help mitigate overtiredness and maintain a stable bedtime routine.
While preparing for daylight saving time may initially seem daunting, experts believe that small, gradual adjustments can significantly ease the transition for children. By taking these steps, families can minimize disruptions and help their little ones settle back into their familiar sleep patterns more quickly. As the clock changes, maintaining consistency and a well-structured routine will be key to navigating this seasonal shift successfully.
