Lisbon has launched a citywide reusable cup system, making it the first European capital to implement a deposit-and-return scheme aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste in its hospitality and nightlife sectors. This initiative coincides with Plastic Free July and seeks to address the environmental impact of disposable cups, of which about 25,000 are used each night in Lisbon’s vibrant entertainment areas.

The reusable cup system, introduced on June 27, allows customers to receive drinks in reusable cups after paying a €0.60 deposit. Customers can easily reclaim their deposit by returning the cup to designated return points, which initially include two historic kiosks at Praça de São Paulo and Praça do Príncipe Real. The process is designed to be straightforward, requiring no registration or app; users simply tap their contactless card or mobile device for a full refund.

The initiative is part of Lisbon City Council’s broader strategy to eliminate disposable plastic cups by 2024. This regulatory change aims to foster sustainable consumption habits among residents and visitors alike. The city plans to expand the system throughout central neighborhoods by October 2025, with plans for 17 return points in the popular Baixa district.

Local hospitality businesses are crucial to the system’s success. The Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Similar Services of Portugal (AHRESP) is collaborating with bars, cafes, and nightclubs to implement the new model, positioning it as both a practical solution to upcoming regulations and an opportunity to promote sustainable practices.

This reusable cup initiative is expected to not only enhance environmental sustainability by keeping streets cleaner but also contribute to the establishment of a circular economy in Lisbon. The program highlights the city’s commitment to reducing plastic waste through innovative solutions and community involvement.
