These webs, when hung across open spaces, can obstruct flight paths, making it difficult for animals to see and avoid them. Additionally, there is a risk that animals may ingest the webbing, mistaking it for food or consuming prey caught in it.
Real pumpkins, another popular decoration, can also attract wildlife. Bloodgood notes that placing pumpkins outside can lure animals such as rabbits and deer, which may then venture into busy roads, increasing the risk of accidents. To mitigate these dangers, she advises homeowners to keep decorations close to their houses and avoid placing enticing food items like pumpkins in areas where animals are likely to forage.
Being mindful of decoration placement can help ensure that Halloween celebrations do not inadvertently harm local wildlife. Bloodgood emphasizes the importance of awareness, especially for those living in wildlife-rich areas.
