From Trash to Treasure: Researchers Transform Old Phones into Sustainable Mini Data Centers

A new study from European researchers has revealed innovative ways to repurpose outdated smartphones, transforming them into functional miniature data centers. This initiative aims to tackle both the challenges of electronic waste and the need for real-time data collection in various fields, including marine research and urban transit systems.

The research, conducted at the University of Tartu in Estonia and published in IEEE Pervasive Computing, outlines a budget-friendly approach to reprogramming old smartphones. The process involves removing the battery to prevent chemical leaks and connecting the devices to an external power source. By grouping four smartphones in 3D-printed casings, researchers created a prototype that can effectively process and store data, albeit no longer used for traditional functions like texting or taking photos.

One of the most significant applications of these repurposed devices has been tested underwater, where they successfully counted marine species in real-time. This advancement eliminates the need for scuba divers to collect footage and return to shore for analysis, allowing for immediate data processing and insights into marine life.

Beyond marine applications, the micro data centers can also be utilized at public transport hubs to monitor passenger numbers. This capability may assist city planners in optimizing transit systems, showcasing the versatility and potential of these repurposed smartphones.

The production of over 1.2 billion smartphones annually contributes to a growing e-waste crisis, with many devices replaced every two to three years. Researchers argue that while the transformation of a few phones into data hubs won’t resolve the global e-waste issue, it represents a significant step toward a more sustainable and circular tech economy. By reimagining the use of these devices, the study promotes a vision where yesterday’s technology creates new opportunities for today.
