In a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting women navigating the complexities of divorce, a new retreat in Kerala, India, is making waves as the country’s first “divorce camp.” Founded by Rafia Afi, the program is designed to provide a nurturing environment for women who are divorced, separated, widowed, or in toxic relationships, allowing them to reclaim their narratives and find solace in shared experiences.
The retreat, titled “Break Free Stories,” brings together groups of 15 to 20 women for weekend escapes into nature, where they engage in activities such as hiking, music, and storytelling. The camp’s primary goal is to dismantle the stigma surrounding divorce, fostering a safe space for participants to connect and heal. The gatherings are offered at a modest fee, and financial assistance is available for those in need.
Afi’s journey to create this retreat was sparked by her own experiences with divorce and the realization that many women lack the support systems necessary to navigate such challenges. The camp aims not only to provide emotional healing but also to educate participants about their rights, particularly in cases of domestic violence. Zaki J, a musician and lawyer involved in the camp, conducts legal sessions aimed at empowering attendees with knowledge about their rights and options.
The need for such initiatives is underscored by alarming statistics from India’s National Family Health Survey, which reports that 32 percent of married women aged 18 to 49 have experienced domestic violence. Despite this, societal norms often compel women to remain in harmful relationships, perpetuating cycles of shame and silence.
Participants have described their experiences at the camp as transformative. Many report a newfound sense of liberation and emotional release, with some participants forming strong bonds that resemble sisterhood. The success of the retreat has spurred plans for expansion into other major cities, including Bengaluru and Mumbai, to reach a wider audience.
The growing popularity of Break Free Stories highlights a shift in societal attitudes towards divorce in India, emphasizing that separation can be a positive turning point rather than an end. Afi’s vision is clear: to change the narrative around divorce and promote a message of empowerment and new beginnings for women.
