The Brontë sisters’ literary inspiration is now formally recognized as one of England’s largest national nature reserves. The newly designated Bradford Pennine Gateway spans 1,274 hectares and connects eight nature areas across Bradford and the South Pennines, safeguarding a landscape rich in biodiversity and cultural significance.
Officially announced by the government this week, the reserve aims to enhance access to nature for residents of Bradford, one of the UK’s largest cities, which has been noted for its lack of green space. The area surrounding Haworth, the Brontë sisters’ home village, is historically significant, with its dramatic moorlands serving as a backdrop for classics like “Wuthering Heights.” This initiative ensures that the iconic scenery will be preserved for future generations.
The Bradford Pennine Gateway will protect diverse habitats, including peat bogs, heathland, and rare wetlands, with approximately 90 percent of the area designated as UK priority habitat. These environments are crucial for supporting various rare species, such as adders, curlew, and golden plover.
The establishment of the reserve is a collaborative effort involving the UK government, Bradford Council, and regional partners. Local leaders view it as an opportunity to maintain the area’s character while improving public access to nature. The government has committed to working with local councils and organizations to raise awareness and facilitate visits to the reserve, especially for urban residents.
