Belfast is set to become the first city in Ireland and the UK to eliminate single-use plastic cups in entertainment venues, marking a significant step in environmental sustainability. The initiative, spearheaded by the Venue Sustainability Forum and supported by Visit Belfast, aims to transition major and grassroots venues to reusable cups over the next year.
Participating venues include the SSE Arena, Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall, Oh Yeah Centre, Black Box, Voodoo, and The MAC. The project anticipates a reduction of approximately two million single-use cups annually, significantly decreasing plastic waste and setting a precedent for other cities to follow.
The initiative will employ a closed-loop system for the management of reusable cups, which will be delivered and collected by North Down Marquees, a local service provider. Used cups will be sanitized at a central washing facility in Carryduff before being redistributed to the venues.
The SSE Arena will be the first venue to implement this system, with reusable cups expected to roll out by mid-January. The project has received widespread support from various entertainment venues, highlighting a collective commitment to sustainability.
This initiative is projected to eliminate around 40 tonnes of plastic waste each year from Belfast’s nightlife. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of creating a cultural shift towards sustainability, making it a core aspect of business operations and individual behaviors.
As cities face the growing challenge of plastic pollution, Belfast’s proactive approach not only positions it as a leader in sustainability but also reinforces the potential for collective action to drive meaningful environmental change. By adopting reusable solutions, Belfast is taking essential steps to protect the environment for future generations while enhancing the sustainability of its vibrant nightlife.
